Jim Branham shot a 1901 Colt 38 Long Colt Revolver made in 1901 (this is the gun that proved not to have enough stopping power in the Phillipines during the Spanish American War) to win the Pistol Match. Several M1 Garands, M1 Carbines, 8mm Mauser M98, and a Mosin-Nagant made for Russia by New England Westinghouse in 1915 were shot. Match Proceeds--$142.00 Match Directors Comments: My thanks to all who participated and helped. The purpose of this match is to promote shooting skills and interest in these historic firearms. The oldest rifle used was a Westinghouse 1915 Mosin Nagant 7.62x54mm Russian. Also there were several M1 Garands, M1 carbines, 1903A3 Springfield, two Finnish M39's in 7.62x54R and two Russian 91-30's in 7.62x54R. First and third place in rifle went to M1 Garands and second, fourth and fifth were shot with Mosin-Nagants. The oldest pistol shot was a 1912 Steyr Hahn made in 1913 in 9mm Steyr which Jim Branham used to win the pistol match. Matt Branham used a 1937 Brazilian .45 ACP revolver for 2nd place and Kent Ison used a German P38 in 9mm for third. Jim Necessary shot a (East) German Makarov for 4th place and Randy Rose used a Victory model WWII .38 S&W revolver for fifth place. Of the eleven competitors, ten were club members and one was a visitor from Wise, Virginia. The five top scorers are listed; competitors' scores will be maintained match-to-match for year-to-date aggregate scores. Signup begins at 1:00P.M. and ends at 2:00P.M. Matches begin immediately upon completion of Black Powder Cartridge Rifle and Revolver Match. Spectators and shooters of all abilities are welcome. Eye and Ear protection are required. Entry fee is $5 rifle and $5 pistol. Firearms will be rifles and handguns in centerfire calibers, either original or replicas, adopted for use by any army, navy, or military service prior to 1948, in as issued condition. Match officials will certify correctness from W.B. Smith's Small Arms of the World, other reference works, or match directors' knowledge. Course of fire is standing 10 shots 10 minutes, with three targets being fired in Rifle and three in Handgun. Rifle will be shot at 100 yards and Handgun at 25 yards. Top possible score will be 300-30x in Rifle and the same in Handgun. Highest possible combined aggregate will be 600-60x. Due to time constraints, there will not be a sight-in period. After each target is fired, competitors will go downrange, score the target to their left, and sign it as scorer. The shooter will verify the scorer's tally and sign his target as shooter and turn in to the scoring desk. Results will be posted as soon as possible on the Club website and bulletin board. The Club will have its M1 Garands and M1 Carbine available for rent at $5 each and 30-06 and M1 carbine ammo for match use only at $4.50 per 30 rounds. Open bolt indicators are required. If you don't own one, you may purchase one from the the Club for $3.00. Competitors will be allowed to utilize their own target frames if they do not interfere with the match or other shooters. The purpose of this match is to promote shooting skills and interest in military weapons prior to 1948. This match will attempt to bring an inclusive shooting experience to both competitors and spectators.
